Our favorite Sunscreens and Why ☀️

You need to use sun protection every single day, whether you’re going out into the sun or staying home indoors.

When you participate in outdoor activities you should make sure to reapply, especially if you are near water like beaches, lakes and pools. Water reflects the sun from so many directions and increases the amount of sun we receive, so you can get sun exposure under the awning and in the shade.

I personally prefer sunblock as opposed to sunscreens; however, they both do an excellent job of protecting the skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. Sunscreens contain chemical defense against the rays of the sun versus a physical block. Chemical sunscreens create a chemical reaction in order to break down the harmful rays. Whereas physical blocks, usually zinc and titanium, create a physical barrier against the rays of the sun.

The formulations of sunscreen and sunblock are different. You should choose a sunscreen according to your skin type. There are so many elegant formulations of sun protection that you will be able to find one that feels good, smells ok, does not burn your eyes and most importantly is easy to use EVERY DAY. The days of a beachy white, chalkey, lifeguard formulation are over! We love all suncare from EltaMD.

  • I like to layer an antioxidant daily before my sunscreen. I love Vitamin C E Ferulic.

  • In the summer my favorite is Physical 41 with zinc and titanium. It has a light matte tint which feels clean in summer.

  • In the winter I like to switch it up and use Elements 44. This formulation has hyaluronic acid and more hydration for the cooler months. The hyaluronic acid feels make me glowy and hydrated.

  • Our ultimate best seller is Clear 46 which comes in tinted and untinted. These fantastic sunscreens are great for acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation. The lightweight formulations are wonderful and light and have niacinamide, which is great for balancing skin tone and reducing inflammation. There are so many great formulations. These are just a couple of our favorites and best sellers.

I also have a list of ingredients I avoid. None of the sun protection we carry at Medical Aesthetics of the Hudson Valley contains these ingredients.

  • Oxybenzone

  • Octinoxate

  • Homosalate

  • Octisalate

  • Avobenzone
